Sprinting Into Kentucky Derby Festival Race Weekend
It is almost Kentucky Derby Festival Race Weekend and if you are a running enthusiast you are most likely pleased with the weekend weather forecast. Luckily, the temperatures will be very comfortable for the Saturday morning race, but the Friday evening race could be a little on the warm side. When a race forecast starts creeping into the 70s or higher, your pace, your hydration, and your mentality all need adjusting.
If you've been prepping for a race you know is going to be hot, heat training is the best way to prepare for it. That means going out for training runs in the heat of the day when possible.
You'll want to make sure you're properly hydrated going into the race. That means drinking enough water or electrolyte drink the day prior to the race. It is very helpful to carry your own water during the race if possible.
Dress properly for the heat, wear sunglasses, a hat, and light, moisture wicking clothing. Make sure to protect yourself from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen.
The higher the temperature, the slower you should expect to run in order to stay as cool as possible for as long as possible. If you start out too fast, you could overheat early.
Whenever you pass an aid station, grab a cup of water or an ice sponge if available. Throw it on yourself if necessary to cool down.
