Tips For A Safe And Fun Memorial Day
Memorial Weekend is the unofficial start to summer, which means several lakes and the Ohio River are about to get very busy. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend at the campground, taking the pontoon out for the first big ride of the year, or spending the afternoon grilling with family and friends, a little preparation and planning can make the weekend way more enjoyable. Although the water at several of the popular lakes, such as Rough River and Nolin Lake, is severely low due to drought conditions, hopefully that doesn’t stop you from enjoying the upcoming weekend. There are many other lakes or the Ohio River to enjoy.
Before you head to the water make sure you’re ready for a fun and safe Memorial Weekend on the water.
Check that your boat has enough life jackets for everyone onboard and make sure they fit, especially for kids who could outgrow their life jacket from the previous year. All boats are required to have a fire extinguisher, horn, lights, and a throwable flotation device before leaving the dock.
The first big boating weekend of the year usually means heavier traffic on the water, so safety matters more than ever.
Bring extra sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, hats, and plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. It is also a good idea to have a first aid kit on board.
You cannot have a boat day without good food. Pack more snacks and drinks than you think you’ll need because people somehow get twice as hungry when on the water. Easy grab-and-go foods, sandwiches, chips, dip and veggies or fruit, are perfect for a day on the water.
Having dry towels, sweatshirts for cooler evenings, and an extra change of clothes can save the day, especially if temperatures drop as the sun sets, which is not uncommon this time of year in North Central Kentucky.
Nothing ruins Memorial Weekend faster than problems at the boat ramp.
Before leaving home, make sure:
The batteries are charged.
The fuel tank is full.
The trailer lights work
The plug is packed and ready.
The ropes and anchors are onboard.
Tubes, skis, or fishing gear are loaded.
Good music, good people, and a relaxed schedule are honestly what make the best lake days memorable. Memorial Weekend is about slowing down, enjoying the weather, and making the most of the start of summer.
Some of the best memories happen during the simple moments. Summer goes by fast, enjoy every minute of it.
